Every high-impact presentation comes with a hidden cost:
Adrenaline, emotion, mental strain.
If you want to consistently speak well, you can’t skip the fourth, vital part of the presentation process - recovery.
After applause fades and the mic is turned off, most presenters rush to judgment…
“Did it land?”
“Why didn’t they laugh?”
“What did I forget?”
In that moment, that’s the worst activity you can engage in. There will be time for that later.
Instead… pause…
Breathe.
You just poured out mental and emotional energy. Give yourself time to recalibrate.
Step outside. Take a walk.
If it's a high stakes engagement and you have more time when it’s finished, go do something you love.
I just concluded an intense two-day story training workshop in Tampa, Florida. The next day I was on a jet ski in the Gulf of Mexico. That’s my de-stresser.
Find The Activity That Gives You Relief.
Once you've recovered, then review your presentation.
Write out your thoughts.
Review your video.
Ask others for feedback
Focus first on what worked.
This lowers your emotional temperature and reminds you of key parts that you'll want to repeat in future versions
It also keeps you from being too harsh on yourself.
After you’ve reviewed all you performed well, then focus on areas where you can improve.
Words are important - don’t ask yourself “Where did I fail?” or say, “I sucked” or “I’m terrible at this.”
Instead, ask where you can improve.
The Key To Long Term Success
Recovery isn’t about checking out — it’s about resetting.
You’re building longevity, not chasing applause.
If you want to speak again in a few days with the same energy?
You have to refuel.
Even athletes have cooldowns. Why shouldn’t speakers?
Recovery isn’t indulgent. It’s essential.
If you want to consistently deliver brilliance, you must protect the vessel that delivers it — you.
